Emergency Relief

An emergency is defined as: ‘an event that threatens serious damage to human life, health, property, and the environment’. They can devastate a society so much that it can't cope using its resources alone. Emergencies have natural and/or human causes such as war, refugee crises, earthquakes, tsunamis, famine, drought and floods. Some happen suddenly, but many others - such as famine and war - build up over time and can be predicted. Many crises are ‘chronic’ in that they last for many years and the people remain in a constant state of crisis.

At Human Appeal International we react urgently to an emergency to prevent a worsening of the situation. Children are particularly at risk at these times because they are physically weaker than adults and threatened by being separated from their families.

Human Appeal International began as an emergency relief agency. Now we respond to people's immediate needs in an emergency whilst making long-term recovery and development a priority. The emphasis is on preventing disasters as much as possible, and finding lasting solutions to problems.Human Appeal's emergency teams are constantly on standby, ready to respond to disasters as and when they occur. Whether the emergency is natural or man-made, we look after the immediate needs of the victims by distributing food, medicine, tents and clothing, while assessing what long-term reconstruction can be done.Through years of experience, Human Appeal International has gained the trust and cooperation of international aid agencies and government authorities such as the UN World Food Programme (WFP), the UK Department for International Development

(DFID), and the European Commission for Humanitarian Aid (ECHA).
