India has the second largest population in
the world with 1.1 billion people. One third of them – 394 million
people – live below the poverty line on less than 50p a day. Less than
two-thirds of them can read or write. 75% of the population live in
rural areas that lack proper medical care access to water and
education. Education is a huge problem for the rural communities who
remain largely illiterate.
Human Appeal International in India
Human Appeal International have several programmes in India and a
good track record working in the country. We played a key role in
helping survivors of the earthquake that struck Gujarat state in 2001:
providing them with emergency relief running trauma clinics building
houses for the survivors and providing small micro credit grants for
people to kick start their businesses. We also built a 20 000-litre
water storage tanker for the whole population of Kavi village.
Human Appeal International are now focusing on the sponsorship of
orphans refurbishing several schools and working on water and
sanitation projects. As always we continue with our seasonal
programmes: Qurbani and Ramadan distribution.
