Indonesia
The 2004 Tsunami completely devastated Indonesia – no other country suffered worse damage – and more than 350 000 people lost their lives… In the northern province of Aceh more than 150 000 people lost their lives and an estimated 500 000 people were made homeless. 1 000 schools were destroyed. Our Australian branch have been working in this province for over 10 years and have extensive experience and friendly relationships with the locals. Building on this experience we were able to respond quickly and effectively to the needs of the people.
Emergency Relief
HAI UK and HAI Australia offices provided food water and medical assistance to the survivors. The main focus of our work was in Aceh. Several food distribution points were set up across Aceh and food parcels water and medical hygiene kits were given out to survivors as emergency relief.
Medical Centre
In the phase of reconstruction Human Appeal International focused on long-term development and healthcare facilities. Over 100 clinics were destroyed and people’s access to medical health care was gravely disrupted. Medical facilities for the population of Aceh were already well below acceptable standards. We built a medical centre in Nangroe Aceh Darussalam providing healthcare for the people of Banda Aceh Regency Aceh Besar and West Aceh.
Income Generation
One of the largest industries affected by the Tsunami were the fishing community. It was almost completely destroyed as many many fishermen died at sea; their boats (and even ships) were annihilated. We started a project providing 1 000 fishing boats to help the local fishermen to return to work and begin providing for their families again. The 1 000 boats needed would be made by providing essentials tools for local tradesmen to build the boats securing a regular source of income for both groups.
