Indonesian Quake

Over 1100 dead and 2400+ injured in Indonesian earthquake

Thousands are feared dead and thousands more have been displaced after a powerful earthquake (7.6-magnitude) hit the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Wednesday 30th September 2009. The current death toll is over 1100 and the number is expected to rise as many are still trapped under the rubble of collapsed buildings.

Lack of equipment

There has been no suitable equipment available to remove the rubble and this is creating an increase in the death toll. Rescue workers have been digging with their hands where possible to reach those alive under the rubble.

"Our prediction is that thousands have died "
[R. Pakaya head of the health ministry`s disaster centre]
