Yemen has a long history of conflict and civil war that has left deep scars on the country. Traditionally tribesman rule most of the poorest areas therefore making it difficult for progress and development.

Yemen is the only low income country in the middle east. Education indicators shows that it has the worst adult illiteracy record in the region. Out of a population of 20 million approximately 42% are living below the national poverty line which is less than £2 a day.
