Rohingya Crisis Q&A
Who are the Rohingya people?
The Rohingya people are Indo-Aryan Muslims from the Rakhine State, Myanmar. They have settled in the Rakhine State since the 16th century.
Where is Myanmar?
Myanmar is a sovereign state in South East Asia, bordered by Bangladesh, India, China, Lagos, and Thailand. It is perhaps better known as Burma.
What is happening to the Rohingya people?
The Rohingya people have faced persecution and exploitation in Myanmar for many years, and the latest outbreak of violence has forced more than 30,000 people to flee their homes. Human Rights Watch has identified 120,000 homes in Rohingya villages that have been razed to the ground.
Why are the Rohingya people stateless?
In Myanmar, the Rohingya Muslims have been denied citizenship since the 1980s, despite having lived in the country for many generations. They cannot work or travel freely without official permission.
Why don’t the Rohingya people go to Bangladesh?
Thousands of Rohingya people are trying to cross the Naf River to find safety in Bangladesh, but they are subjected to more suffering and hardship on reaching the border. Many are being sent back to Myanmar, where they face death.
How can I help Rohingya refugees?
You can help the Rohingya people by donating to our Myanmar Emergency Appeal. Human Appeal is on the ground in Rakhine State, providing life-saving humanitarian aid to those who need it most. We’re distributing emergency kits and food parcels, but we can only continue this essential work with your support.
